Moving tips & tricks
1. Get rid of unnecessary items
Packing all your wealth into packing boxes, packing bags, and more can be overpowered. Make it a little bit easier on yourself by cutting back on excess as much as possible. Before you pack a box, do a ruthless extermination of unnecessary or unused items. You will have less to pack then less to move and at the end less to unpack. You will start life in your new place with a clean slate.
2. Make a moving calendar
Start collecting rental or purchase papers, new addresses, moving contracts, and more in one folder. Keep a hard copy rather than a digital one, because in case phone or laptop batteries die during the move then you will face trouble. If any questions arrive during the planning or the moving, you will have the answer, payments, records of agreements and more on hand.
3. Pack in advance
Generally you will know about your move (even if you are not sure about the final destination) a couple of weeks or even months in advance. Start your packing with off season items and the items you won’t miss. When it’s time to pack everything up and move, then you have many items already packed. In that stressful time when you have just a few days before the move, you won’t be concerned about not getting everything packed in time.
4. Book Moving Services early
If you are hiring any moving services or having services such as painters or cleaners work on the house, book them early. Waiting to do so could mean paying more or not being able to get a truck or movers at all, especially if it is a peak moving season.
5. Schedule utilities for your new place
Once the dates are decided, contact your utility provider Company to arrange services at your new home. You do not want to reach there, annoyed from the move, to find that the water, electricity or heat is off. Organise it ahead of time, and keep records of your requests in your moving calendar. At the same time, request service stops for your move out date at your present home.
6. Keep the essentials with you
On the night before the move, tuck daily routine essentials like a change of clothes, must-have stuffed animals or toys for the kids, a toothbrush, medications, important paperwork etc. So keep these essentials into a suitcase/bag you will keep with you in your car or on the plane etc. At least in case of any emergency you will have some essentials with you.
7. Invest in Some Equipment
A few days before the moving day, stock up on supplies. Order or purchase some box cutters, permanent markers, packing tape, adhesive bandages, garbage bags and paper towels. If they are not all used during the moving process, they will still be useful during unpacking materials.
If you do not hire a moving service then you must have furniture pads or covers, a furniture dolly and tie-down straps or rope at your disposal during the move.
8. Get a truck which have loading ramp
If you are doing everything on your own then you absolutely need a truck with a ramp. It may be cheaper to rent a truck without one, but the difficulty and struggle of lifting every box and piece of furniture high enough to get it into the truck will add hours. Additionally you will need physical strength as well to move.
9. Balancing of boxes in Trucks
If you are loading the truck by yourself then put heavier boxes first, toward the front of the truck for balance. And put lighter boxes on the back of the truck to avoid damages. Avoid putting heavier boxes on the lighter ones.
