Perhaps you have lost the guidance (accept it, you have probably lost them), you don’t recognise how you placed it together in the first place, or maybe the person who served you assembled it is long gone. Tips for Disassembling Furniture
Here we have some tips for you to make the job a little easier.
- Collect the right tools before you start. Most self-built furniture needs some necessary hand tools. You must have the following tools before you start:
- Painter’s tape
- Sharpie
- Screwdrivers (regular and Phillip’s)
- Hammer
- Rubber mallet
- Pliers
- Wrench
- Allen wrench set
- Ziplock bags ( to store the screws and small parts you later remove)
- Blankets or protective material
- Download the IKEA Assembly Instructions for your product. These will be useful at the dismantle stage to assure that you have all of the dowels, screws and small pieces accounted for as you take the product apart. The instructions/guidance will then be essential when reassembling it at your new place.
- First of all, plan and then take your time. If you try to dismantle your furniture quickly, you may damage sensitive parts. Furniture that you place together yourself is generally made from lightweight plywood or other layered materials that are more touchy than one piece structure or solid wood.
- Label all the items with painter’s tape and a sharpie before you start dismantle your furniture so that when you go to place it back together again, you have all of the items or parts clearly marked.
- Take images of your item or product before you start to disassemble. Use your mobile phone to click images from all sides of the item. Take pictures of how joints are assembled, also how hinges have been installed and how pieces are placed together. If the product label with identifying message or the part number (for example A, B, C, D) is visible, take an image showing the identifying info or message so you can point out to the assembly instructions later. Save the pictures in a folder on your device for easy hint or reference.
- Give yourself enough space. Move your furniture to the centre of the room before starting to take it apart and then make sure you have an easy approach to places like the bottom and back.
- Eliminate everything inside before you start. Make sure your furniture doesn’t have anything in an invisible cabinet before you remove any fasteners, screws or shelves.
- First of all remove the doors. Place the hinges that put the door in balance and hang in a Ziplock bag and also label it.
- Stack the labeled products or pieces or items neatly, and use padding between each layer to avoid nicks, scratches and marks.
- Check all of the hinges, screws, dowels and other small parts by taping them to the back of one the pieces of your disassembled furniture with painters tape. Use caution.
- Manage the pieces of items together when loading your moving car or truck. Trying to reassemble your furniture at your new place when you cannot find all the pieces won’t just make the job problematic. Your furniture will become useless/unworkable. Stay organised/managed from the start.
- First of all Plan, then take your time, keep things organised and your furniture will be assembled in your new home in a very short time. Best of Good luck!
